New Build Church, Slough

9.72kWp - New Build Church, Slough

Objective
This new church development occupies a central position in the locality, not only as a place of worship but also by local community groups for numerous activities and events. The Architect and the parish were keen that renewable energy should play an important part in the building’s design.  A Solar PV  roofing system was selected because it is clearly visible both as an example to the local community and to demonstrate the Church’s commitment to sustainability.

Specific design issues
South Facing worked closely with the main contractor to overcome design and structural issues.

Solution
Mono silicon modules were selected to blend in visually with the slate roof – the module frames were also painted to match.
A large visual display has been installed in the church foyer showing the output of the system. This helps to educate parishioners and users by showing the reduction in the buildings carbon footprint.

Result
The Solar PV system is orientated due south perfectly utilising the full power of the sun – helping it to generate over 900kWp per kWh/yr and abate 5 tonnes of C02 emissions.
South Facing helped the Church to apply and successfully obtain 50% funding for the project from the Low Carbon Building Programme.
